The Tea Ceremony

For me tea drinking is more than just a cuppa. Tea drinking is a ceremony and that means that presentation is important to me.

For me tea drinking is more than just a cuppa. Tea drinking is a ceremony and that means that presentation is important to me.

I don’t just make a cup of tea and set it alongside my laptop and sip away as I work. No, I stop, make the tea then sit down peacefully to drink it. It’s quite therapeutic doing it this way and it allows me to pause and have time for me.

Teapots and tea

Making tea has to be made in a pot, this is part of the ceremony. Despite having temperature control kettles in which you can heat and make the tea in one go, a “kettle-pot” or maybe a “pot-kettle” is what we should call them, is not for me.

There has to be a teapot otherwise it’s not really tea, is it?

So I would heat some water, as always, heat the pot with some of the water then make the tea. Allowing it to brew for two minutes and then the tea is ready to drink.

The Variable Temperature Kettle

Before I got my nice new variable temperature kettle, I would boil the water, let it cool a little then make the tea. This was always a guess that the water was at the right temperature. But I think I was quite good at it.

The variable temperature kettle just removed all the guess work.

But I still make tea in one of my many teapots I have and continue to collect. It just means that thew whole process is more precise

My Love affair with teapots

Many of us are collectors, coins, stamps – and for me that means teapots.

Now I don’t collect rare or expensive collector teapots – although I believe there are those that do. I collect teapots on my travels. When I’m passing through a market or a car boot sale.

I don’t know how many I have. A lot are in a tea chest that we used when moving house some years ago. The box is still in the loft and hasn’t been opened since.

But I do have favourites and it’s the simple Chinese pots I like the best. The rest are in a display cabinet, I rarely use any of those.

Teapots you can buy right now - today

I was told to select some teapots from Amazon that I would select today – If I had a bigger house than I have now. This is not an easy task as there are lots to choose.

Just select six they told me but this was hard to do. When you’re a teapot junky then you want everything. Amazon has a lot of choice which I kept down to 12 that I would buy right now.
